Is Pest Control Safe for Your Home?
It's the most common question we hear from Utah County families: "Is professional pest control safe for my home?" The short answer is yes — when applied by a licensed professional using modern products. Here's everything you need to know.
How Modern Pest Control Products Work
The pest control industry has evolved dramatically. The broad-spectrum pesticides of past decades have been largely replaced by targeted, low-toxicity formulations that are specifically designed for residential use. Products used by licensed professionals today go through extensive registration processes that evaluate safety for humans and the environment.
The active ingredients in most modern exterior barrier sprays are synthetic pyrethroids — chemicals modeled after naturally occurring compounds found in chrysanthemum flowers. They're highly effective against insects but have minimal impact on mammals at the concentrations used in residential pest control.
What "suitable for residential use once dry" Actually Means
When your technician says a treatment is "suitable for residential use once dry," here's what's happening chemically: wet product can be absorbed more easily through skin contact. Once the treatment dries — typically 30-60 minutes for exterior applications — the active ingredient bonds to the treated surface and becomes significantly less bioavailable. It remains lethal to insects that walk across it but poses negligible risk to anyone who touches the same surface.
Our standard recommendation: Stay off treated surfaces until they're dry to the touch. For exterior treatments, this is typically 30-60 minutes. Interior treatments may take 1-2 hours depending on ventilation.
What We Use at Avada
Every product in our service toolkit is registered for residential use. We do not use any restricted-use pesticides in or around homes. Specific details:
- Exterior barrier sprays: Synthetic pyrethroid formulations applied to the foundation perimeter, eaves, and entry points
- Granular baits: Applied to landscaping beds where ants, earwigs, and crickets breed — enclosed granules that target pests specifically
- Rodent bait stations: All bait stations are tamper-resistant and locked — designed to prevent access by non-target wildlife
- Mosquito treatments: Targeted misting applied to foliage where mosquitoes rest — not broadcast across open yard areas
Special Precautions for Homeowners
Different situations may call for different approaches. A few things to know:
- Exterior treatments are generally lower risk after drying. Our standard exterior treatments pose minimal risk after the product has dried.
- Interior treatments may require additional ventilation. We always adjust our product selection depending on the specific needs of each room.
- Fish ponds or water features — if you have outdoor fish ponds or water features, let us know before treatment. We take extra precautions to prevent any product from reaching water.
- Food preparation areas — we never spray near food prep surfaces. We recommend clearing countertops during treatment.
What About DIY Products?
Ironically, many over-the-counter pest control products available at hardware stores are actually higher-risk than professional formulations. Big-box store bug bombs and foggers, for example, distribute product indiscriminately throughout your living space — including surfaces where your children eat and play. Professional technicians apply product precisely where pests travel, minimizing exposure to living areas.
Our Safety Commitment
Every Avada technician is licensed through the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food. We carry full liability insurance and follow strict application protocols. If you have specific health concerns, allergies, or sensitivities, let us know — we can adjust our approach for your family's needs.
